How to Compare Engagement Ring Quotes (And What Most People Miss)

Comparing engagement ring quotes looks simple — until you realise half the information you need is missing. Unless you know exactly what to ask for, you're taking a shot in the dark. Here's what to look for.

Apples to Apples

The Diamond

Diamond prices vary significantly based on weight, colour, clarity, and cut — the 4Cs. So when comparing quotes, you'd want those specs to be as close as possible between the two.

Sounds simple enough. The problem is that your comparison is only as reliable as the grading behind it — and not all diamond grading laboratories are equal. Some certificates are outright misleading.

Stick with well-recognised labs: IGI for lab-grown diamonds, and GIA for mined diamonds. GIA-certified stones sell at a slight premium, but the peace of mind is worth it.

Once you're comparing diamonds graded to the same standard, the specs actually mean something. Not sure what specs to look for? Our 4C guide breaks it down.

The Metal

Precious metal prices have soared over the last couple of years and matter more than ever when pricing an engagement ring or any fine jewellery.

Make sure the metal type — 9k, 14k, 18k or platinum — is consistent across every quote you're comparing. It makes a bigger difference to the bottom line than most people expect.

If you're stuck between metal choices, my current recommendation is 14k gold for rose and yellow, and if you want a white metal, platinum is still your best bet.

The Design

It might seem obvious, but make sure every jeweller in your comparison is quoting on the exact same design.

You can send the same brief to two jewellers and assume they'll use the same base values. Unfortunately not.

Settings are priced primarily on the weight of the metal used — and some jewellers will produce a considerably lighter rendition of your design to bring the quote down. More often than not, that's a bad idea.

You don't want your dream ring at a healthy 5 grams quoted against a cost-cut version at 4 grams. That one gram difference compromises the durability of the ring and the security of every diamond set in it. A ring has a healthy weight and proportions — cutting either is a long-term disaster.

If you need to bring the price down, the right move is to slightly reduce the centre diamond size while keeping everything else in the sweet-spot range. Don't go on a weight saving exercise on the metalwork.

Also check the accent diamond specs across quotes. A common cost-cutting trick is swapping in lower quality accent stones — easy to miss, and it matters.

The Total Price

Engagement ring quotes have two elements — the centre stone and the setting (your metal choice and any accent diamonds). Some jewellers price the setting low and charge more for the diamond. Others do the opposite.

Neither is wrong. Just compare the bottom line.

Quality Isn't in the Quote

Nothing in this post matters if you choose a jeweller on price alone and end up with a sub-par piece. And it happens more than you'd think — a lot of secondhand jewellery from other jewellers crosses my desk.

What I see repeatedly: poor setting work where diamonds aren't properly secured, sloppy finishing on surfaces that should be flawless, and general craftsmanship that simply doesn't hold up to scrutiny. These aren't rare exceptions — they're the predictable result of cutting corners to win on price.

You're fortunate to have a lot of great jewellers around, but there are a few with serious quality issues. The only way to filter them out is reviews.

Spend 30 minutes on HelloPeter and Google Reviews — but focus on the reviews under 3 stars. That's where the real picture is. And be aware that positive reviews can be bought these days, so don't let a wall of five stars fool you.

One more thing worth doing — ask to see finished pieces in person before you commit. Any jeweller confident in their work will have no problem showing you.

After-Sales Service Matters More Than You Think

You're not buying a t-shirt. Your ring will need to be cleaned, resized, checked for loose diamonds, polished up for special occasions, and revalued over the next few decades. That's a long relationship with your jeweller.

Before you confirm your order, get clarity on the following:

  • How much does resizing cost?

  • Is there a full money-back guarantee if you're not happy with the end product?

  • What does general maintenance cost — yearly check-ups, polishing?

  • Are valuation certificates included in the purchase price?

  • Is there a charge to update valuation certificates yearly?

  • If you choose white gold, what does rhodium plating cost?

Some jewellers offer none of this after the sale. Others make it part of the deal. It's not a small thing when you're buying something you'll wear every day for the rest of your life.

At Poggenpoel, every order includes free polishing, free check-ups, and a full money-back guarantee.
