How to Choose the Right Engagement Ring Design

How to Choose the Right Engagement Ring Design

An engagement ring is the one piece of jewellery you'll wear every single day — hopefully for decades. Yes, you can have it remodelled at any stage, but getting it right from the start is at least a noble pursuit.

A decade or two ago, choosing an engagement ring was straightforward. You'd visit a couple of local jewellers, weigh up a dozen or so designs, and make your choice. These days, a potent cocktail of social media, Google Images and AI hands you access to a bottomless well of ideas — and that's where it gets tricky.

Overwhelm sets in fast. You start pinning designs you love, then designs you sort-of love, then designs you're not sure about but can't stop looking at. Without a clear framework, it's easy to end up chasing something that momentarily looks incredible on a screen but won't hold up to twenty years of daily wear.

So — how do you find your way to the right design?

Ignore Trends (If You Can)

We're exposed to so much visual noise every day that it's easy to absorb micro-trends without even realising it. What feels like a genuine personal preference is sometimes just a reflection of what the algorithm has been feeding you.

A good jeweller has watched trends come and go for years — ask for their honest take. They'll usually be able to tell you whether something is a timeless style or a fad that's already peaked.

And fads do peak. Trends don't slowly fade into the background — they crash and burn. Think tie-dye shirts, camo shorts, the step haircut. Filigree and vintage-inspired designs were all the rage 7 years ago. Guess which style we see being remodelled now?

What you're looking for is something classy, elegant and timeless — a ring you'll still be in love with in twenty years. Designs that have stood the test of time have done so for a reason.

Maintenance and Cleaning

All rings need a thorough clean from time to time — but some designs demand far more TLC than others.

Filigree work is a good example. Those delicate curls and swirls look stunning in photos, but those tiny gaps are magnets for a grim cocktail of moisturiser, dirt and dust. Getting them properly clean requires effort, and they look grubby faster than simpler designs.

Extremely slim band profiles have their own issue — they bend over time. What starts as an elegant, barely-there look can lose its shape after years of daily wear.

If you're not the type to enjoy routine cleaning and polishing, opt for something low-maintenance — a design that's easy to clean and doesn't show dirt readily. Simpler is your friend here.

Keep practicality in mind while you browse. A ring that photographs beautifully is not always a ring that wears beautifully.

Budget

Not everything is possible within every budget — but a good jeweller will help you find the sweet spot.

The most important thing to keep in mind: the centre stone is the star of the show. Don't compromise on the diamond to fund a more elaborate setting. We'll show you exactly where your budget is best spent so you're not paying for specs you won't be able to appreciate in a finished ring.

Lab-grown diamonds have completely changed what's possible within a set budget. If you're shopping in the sub-R30 000 bracket, I think they're a no-brainer. Over that line, mined diamonds become a compelling option again.

Set a budget you're comfortable with, visit one of our studios to see what's possible at different price brackets, and let's work from there.

Metal Choice

There's no wrong answer when it comes to metal colour — rose, yellow or white. Go with whatever you love.

Don't overthink trends here either. Metal colour preferences shift every few years, but it's cyclical — whatever you choose will have its moment again.

Skin tone as a starting point

If you're unsure where to begin, skin tone is a useful guide:

Dark skin tones — you're in luck, everything works. Yellow and rose gold in particular really pop. Medium and olive skin tones — rose gold or yellow gold tend to be most flattering. Fair skin tones — white gold, platinum or yellow gold all work well.

Karat and metal quality

Precious metal prices have climbed significantly over the last few years, so the karat question matters more than ever.

My current recommendations: 14k for rose and yellow gold, and platinum if you want a white metal. White gold is softer than platinum and needs rhodium replating roughly once a year to maintain its colour — and at current platinum prices, the gap between the two has narrowed enough that white gold simply doesn't make sense anymore.

9k gold isn't ideal for engagement rings. It's a harder alloy, which sounds like a benefit — but that hardness means claws are more prone to snapping, and it will wear down any other gold jewellery it comes into contact with that isn't also 9k. Not a disaster, just not my first choice for something worn daily for decades.

18k yellow gold has a richer, deeper hue than 9k or 14k — if that warmer appearance appeals to you, it's worth considering. But for most people, 14k hits the sweet spot between colour, durability and value.

Your Lifestyle Matters More Than You Think

Hands are high-wear areas regardless of your profession — your engagement ring will take a knock or two every single day, guaranteed. But some jobs and hobbies are significantly harder on rings than others.

If your hands are constantly busy — whether you're a preschool teacher, an ER doctor, a mechanic or a keen gardener — a ring loaded with small diamonds is asking for trouble. Stones get knocked loose. Claws snag and bend. A simpler, more robust design will serve you far better in the long run.

Safety is worth thinking about too. If you work in an environment where a large, prominent ring is a liability, you won't wear it every day — and a ring that sits in a drawer is a ring that was bought for nothing. It's one of the more heartbreaking scenarios we see: a stunning ring, genuinely over the top, that the owner just can't wear to work.

Keep your everyday environment front of mind when choosing a design. The right ring is one you can actually live in.

Consider Your Hand and Body Type

No Fashion Police here — but the shape and size of your hand genuinely matters when choosing a ring.

Delicate hands can be overwhelmed by a bulky, chunky setting. Larger hands can swallow a ring that's too dainty. Neither is a good look, and neither is something you want to be self-conscious about every day.

Be honest with yourself. Find a design you're confident will complement your hand — not compete with it.

After All, It's Still About Your Personal Taste

Ladies — an engagement ring is worn every single day, by no one else but you. It needs to complement your personal style and make you feel cherished, loved and beautiful every time you glance at it.

Just remember: over the course of many decades, the practical realities of wearing your ring will outweigh those tiny design details you thought were adorable initially. We always advise finding the simplest design you truly love — and going with that.

Gentlemen — you are taking a serious risk choosing a ring without any input from your future Mrs. Why gamble on something this significant?

In our experience, around 90% of women are involved to some degree in the engagement ring selection process. We've worked with thousands of couples over the years and we've seen which rings get remodelled and which ones ladies never grow tired of.

Take your time - get it perfect.
